It’s no secret that cannabis helps you sleep, but did you know there are specific cannabinoids and terpenes you can specifically choose to optimize this effect? Working with our cannabis consultants to find what is best for your sleep routine is easy at Mary Modern. Here are some key factors to consider before your search for some cannabis zzz’s.
The first thing you need to do is remember that strains labeled as “Indica” are best for rest and lulling you to sleep. Visually, Indica dominant cannabis has denser, larger buds and can have a heavy crystallization to it. Some of our favorite Indica cannabis strains are the classic Kush, Wedding Cake, Northern Lights or Grand Daddy Purple varieties. These strains typically have lower THC and higher levels of CBD which is great for relaxation as well as another cannabinoid called CBN that lends its deeply drowsy quality. The terpenes often found in these are mycerene, linalool and beta-caryophyllene and humulene. Which all have sedative properties perfect for snoozing as well as excellent for pain relief (bonus!) Many modern cannabis products are marketed directly as sleep aids and have that on their packaging to help you easily differentiate them from an uplifting Sativa.
There are many ways to achieve sleepiness with cannabis but keep in mind the way you choose to ingest also helps with how quickly and deeply you’ll be able to fall asleep. Inhaling cannabis is the quickest way to feel its effects, but if you are not wanting to smoke it there are plenty of other options! We find that incorporating it into a bedtime routine is relaxing in of itself and love the use of cannabis teas, gummies or tinctures too.
Now that you’ve decided on an Indica forward strain and method in which to enjoy it, we suggest taking the product 30-45 minutes before you are ready to lay down. This gives it optimal time to settle in and unwind. Sweet dreams!
